What Does My CT Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Oct 2017
Question: i had a solitary pulmonary nodule back in 2011 that was followed via repeat CT scans (4) for 2 years, it disappeared thus resolved. On a follow up x-ray report in 2014 the following radiology report states:
"Chronic interstitial fibrosis is noted without acute infiltrate, no acute processes noted"
my PCP didnt think much about that language, and pulmonologist looked at the film and also said he doesnt see anything that would suggest major concern. very concerned, my father died of DIP, just quit smoking 3 weeks ago (25 years , 1 pack daily). your opinion on radiology terminology?? ty!!

Brief Answer:
the chest CT-scan is more specific for lung fibrosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HealthcareMagic,

I can understand your concern,

Chronic interstitial fibrosis in chest X-ray is a wide definition and not very exact. This fibrosis might be a post inflammatory one due to smoking.

For specifying it better we mainly use CT scan of the lungs.

I understand your concern about your father's dying cause.
Desquamative interstitial pneumonia has some specifications in CT scan but if there is a suspicion from your doctor then he should order a lung biopsy for diagnosing the specific pattern of fibrosis.

You have already done the most important step stopped smoking.

You can discuss with your doctor for the above or you can attach a chest CT image here and we can discuss it further.

Take care and feel free to ask me again
