What Does My EEG Test Report Indicate?
History:
1. He had a total of 5 seizures
2. First two were associated with fever and there was 3 months gap between them
3. 3rd, 4th and 5th were not associated with fever and only had 12 days gap between each one of them.
Can you please help us understand the outlook for our little one? We are put on Keppra - 1.8ml twice a day. Is it safe? Reading online about side-effects is very scary - is it really that bad?
Need some inputs...
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting your query on Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I had gone through the problem and looked into the details attached. Your son had febrile seizures followed by unprovoked afebrile seizures. EEG shows abnormalities consistent with generalized seizures. I would like to know little bit about his birth history, developmental mile stones, other associated neurological problems, MRI findings if done and family history of seizures or epilepsy. History of fall or trauma to head or neuroinfections in the past is also of help. This information will be of help to me to decide if we are dealing with "benign" epilepsy or not. Benign epilepsies are good epilepsies and get resolved over a period of time.
Regarding the medications keppra (levetiracetam) is safe without any major side effects. One has to watch for behavioral problems like aggression and irritability. If change in behavior is noted it has to be brought to the notice of the treating physician. Otherwise it is a safe medicine.
So I personally feel you need to continue on the medications and observe him for further seizures and behavioral problems. Regarding the prognosis of the epilepsy you need to provide me the above details.
I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
