Posted on Tue, 3 Oct 2017
Question: Hi,
My Dad had a knee injury 4 months back for which we went for MRI scan as suggested by doctor. Reports of same is attached. Reports suggest full ACL tear. Doctor suggested the surgery for ACL restoration and try for physiotherapy for sometime. For last few months he has been under going physiotherapy for knee. The pain is considerably less now with little swelling on the top of the knee.
1, We really want second opinion regarding the surgery, i.e. if we should go for it or not.
2. if physiotherapy and exercises can help substitute the surgery in long run.
3. Also what precautions should be taken in this situation and if there is medical device or support that should be used which can help and reduce the chances of further injury during the healing process.
Please provide your valuable advice.

Thanks,
Asmi

Brief Answer:
Surgery is necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A complete tear of ACL cannot heal with rest physiotherapy braces or medicines. The torn ends of the ligament need to be put togather surgically for proper healing. Physiotherapy and exercises cannot substitute the surgery as the ligament is completely torn. The stability of knee will gradually reduce and his day to day activities can become painful.
It is best to get the ligament surgically repaired and then start with physiotherapy exercises once it has healed so that the ligament can regain the strength.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks Doctor for your prompt and detailed reply.
Can you please suggest if there is any wearable support that can be used till the time we go for surgery. I am worried as due to his age it should not get worse with stress due to daily activities.
