Question: I have had pain behind my right knee for the past 8 months. I went to ortho and on MRI I had torn meniscus which was cleaned up by surgery in May. I have significant osteoarthritis pain. I think the doctors are not listening- what could be causing the pain that begins behind my knee, goes up back of my leg and it is exptremely painful when I get up to walk after having been sitting down. I walk with a limp and balance is terrible.

Brief Answer:
Possible diagnosis: Popliteal bursitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

The pain that is present behind knee and radiating upward is likely due to popliteal bursa inflammation (popliteal bursitis).
Popliteal bursa is present behind the knees and is a fluid filled cushioning sac. History of medical injury and surgery puts you at increased risk for popliteal bursitis.
An Ultrasound examination of knee can confirm the diagnosis
You can take Tylenol to relieve the pain. Apply ice and take adequate rest. Once the diagnosis is confirmed steroid injections into the bursa and fluid aspiration from bursa along with physical therapy will provide symptom relief.

Would I be better off trying to have the rheumatologist work this up or should I continue with the ortho? I just really am frustrated that the orthodoes not really listen to my symptoms. I am a nurse, which it makes it even more frustrating.

Hello again,

You can follow up with an orthopedician for necessary management. Seeing a rheumatologist is not necessary. Discuss your symptom in detail with your oryhopedician.
