What Does My MRi Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: Hi there

I have received a mri scan with following comment: (please note that i have seen the Dr for this and they said it was nothing but i like further explanation).

Focal deep white matter cavitation with adjasent gliosis within the left centrum semiovale extending to the lateral ventricular margin.. The appearance is consistent with the sequalea of a longstanding cerebral insult. No additional intracreanial abnormality identified and there is no evidence of diffusion restriction to indicate recent infraction . There is no evidence of an intercranial mass lesion.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I have been through your question and understand your concern.

I read the MRI report as well. It is not clear to me the reason which lead you perform the MRI.

The radiologic features report a brain damaged area in the frontal lobe. It is not recent since there is no restriction to diffusion sequences and probably the damage has happened in the trauma you had during childhood. There is nothing to worry since the brain is normal and had no damage for at least one year. So the main question is: Whenever that happened, what caused the brain damage?

Still, since there is a possibility that these damage can be secondary to cardiac rythm or anomalies(unusual at your age but still possible) you should have a electrocardiogram and cardiac ultrasound in my opinion.

Since the MRI was performed in 2011 I suggest to schedule another MRI with angio sequences as well including the supra aortic arch which studies the neck and head vessels.

Talk to your GP about this.

Hipe this helps.

Thank you for your answer Dr. Geldon

I will reschedule a ultrasound, ECT and MRI. As per brain damage; is this something i have to monitor and have repeating MRI's.
What functions are controlled in the area of brain where the damage has occurred?

Thank you again

Brief Answer:
the frontal lobe is complex

Detailed Answer:
Hello again. The frontal area where the damage is reported has no specific function rather than a complex associative function within the whole frontal area. So any change in personality, thinking capacity, reasoning, decision making can be related to this damage but not for sure because as I said the frontal lobe works as a whole so it is difficult to attribuite these tasks to a certain frontal area.

The decision on eventual MRI follow ups will depend on the results of the scheduled tests.

Hope this helps.

Best regards.

One Last question please. From scan point of view would you consider this to be mild, moderate or severe brain injury.

thank you for your help

Brief Answer:
Ct scan is not the best test to evaluate this

Detailed Answer:
Hello. After all you should consider it a past event. The CT scan can only evaluate the damage in terms of dimmension. Generally speaking if the lesion is in order of mm it is considered mild, if 1 cm moderate and in order of several cm is severe.

Still the most important feature in brain damage is its localization. Your brain damaged localization can support even greater damages without causing evident symptoms. Overall this is a mild damage.

Hope this helps

Wish you the best health.
