default
Posted on Thu, 21 Jan 2016
Question: Good evening doctor. I'm a 35 years old woman. During my latest regular medical check up, the ultrasound report came with the remarks " bulky uterus " and "mild fatty liver". How serious r they? Do I have to take any further investigation in this regard? Also my ESR came 30 and all other parameters are normal. I have regular periods. no abnormal bleeding. No abdominal pain. No constipation. Kindly let me know if I have to adopt food practice. Thank u.

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver is not a serious problem and get upper GI endoscopy done

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. There are many causes of liver showing fatty changes
(i) Increased intake of fatty foods and alcohol
(ii) Over weight and obese patients.
(iii) Those who have fatty liver running in family members.
(iv) Any liver condition that is changing appearance of liver.
(v) Mild fatty liver can also be there in many normal people

2. You can get your liver function test and lipid profile done to know if the liver enzymes are raised and cholesterol numbers are increased. Please discuss results with your doctor and take required treatment if your tests results are higher than normal.

3. Please follow a healthy diet and lifestyle. Taking rice with dal, vegetables and fruits and also non vegetarian food is acceptable. If you like to take rice for lunch then you can take 2 to 4 rotis at night for dinner. Total calories in food should be 1800 kcal.

4. The measurement of uterus should not be greater than 80 mm in length and your report shows mild increase in size and therefore bulky. If your periods are normal then there is no problem.

5. If your blood report is normal other than ESR then the increase in ESR test is not important. ESR means erythrocyte sedimentation rate and tells the rate at which the red blood cells separate from the plasma. It is usually high in inflammatory and infectious conditions. A value of 30 mm is not a serious concern.

For gastritis it is better to get an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy done.

Hope your query is answered.
