Brief Answer:
No ,this is not dangerous.Very probably,It is caused by diabetic neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
Thanks for using HCM for your health problems.
I read carefully your question and understood your concern

Your mother has diebetes ,for this reason i think that her symptoms can be attributed to Diabetic neuropathy.Peripheral neuropathy is the most common form of diabetic neuropathy.

Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are often worse at night, and may include:
-Numbness or reduced ability to feel pain or temperature changes
-A tingling or burning sensation
-Sharp pains or cramps
-Itching sensation(this sign can be caused by the damage to nerves ,blood vessels and skin complications.)

Anyone who has diabetes can develop neuropathy, but these factors make a patient with diabetes more susceptible to nerve damage:
-Poor blood sugar control.
-Length of time you have diabetes.
-Kidney disease.
-Being overweight.
-Smoking.
If your mother control most of these factors, she will stop further damage of nerves and blood vesels. So, be careful.

Anyway,If your mum's symptoms interferes with her daily routine or her sleep,i suggest to consult an endocrinologist in your area because for the right diagnose and treatement ,it is necessary to do a test called Electromyography (EMG). Often performed along with nerve conduction studies(ENG), electromyography measures the electrical discharges produced in your muscles.

In your mum's case, the Over-the-counter pain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, that are used as first choise to relieve mild symptoms, haven't been effective.

So,your doctor may prescribe to your mum medications such as gabapentin(Gralise, Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica),or other drugs like certain tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, doxepin and nortriptyline (Pamelor).

Here are some tips that may help:
-using a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.
-avoiding scratching, which can worsen the itch.
-staying away from soaps, detergents, and other substances that contain perfumes and color dyes.
-taking a cool bath with oatmeal or baking soda.
-Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated. Drink 8 glasses (8-ounce glass) of water per day.(If this is not contraindicated)
-Lower stress because Itching is exacerbated by feeling stress.
-When looking for an OTC to treat an itch, look for a medicine containing one the following ingredients:Camphor, Menthol, Phenol, Diphenhydramine, and Benzocaine.
-Taking an oral antihistamine.(Histamine is the hormone that causes the itching sensation that you feel. When you take an antihistamine, this hormone is suppressed, which in turns soothes your skin. For this treatement you must talk with your doctor.)

Hello doctor, many thanks for your reply. It all makes sense and marries with her existing symptoms and illness. I was panicking in case the symptoms were indicative of a blood clot. Sorry I wasn't able to thank you earlier. Kind regards, xxxx
