What Does Presence Of Multiple Blood Vessels In The Umbilical Cord Indicate?

Question: What does it mean when there are too many blood vessels going to the baby?
Brief Answer:
Can be due to a congenital anomaly.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Normally there are three blood vessels in umbilical cord: one vein, which brings nutrients from the placenta to baby, and two arteries that bring waste back to the placenta. If the number of vessels is more then it can be associated with any congenital anomaly in the baby too. It should be ruled out properly after regular antenatal scans.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.

What is a congenital anomaly? and what can it affect with the baby and mother
Brief Answer:
Details below.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Congenital anomalies are structural deformities that are defects in a developing fetus.
If the blood vessels are more in the cord then it will not affect the mother but there can be cardiac anomalies in the baby which can be detected by echocardiography.
Hope my answer is helpful.
