What Does Raised ALT Level Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Here are some results I just saw on a recent lab. These levels appear to be out of the norm range.
Could you please clarify?

alt (sgpt)                70
cholesterol, total           172
triglycerides                412
hdl cholesterol      28
vldl cholesterol cal - The calculation for the VLDL cholesterol is not valid when triglyceride level is >400 mg/dL.

ldl cholesterol calc - Triglyceride result indicated is too high for an accurate LDL cholesterol estimation.

Brief Answer:
Your cholesterol levels are abnormal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear.
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

ALT is a liver enzyme. Your alt is slightly higher than normal. It may be mostly due fatty liver or due to some viral infection, drugs or alcohol. You should go for complete liver function test. If needed take treatment accordingly. Avoid alcohol consumption.

Your triglycerides levels are too high and your hdl cholesterol level is low. So it is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. You should take treatment to control your cholesterol level.

You should take low fat diet with high amount of polyunsaturated fatty acid and high fiber diet. If you are overweight then try reduce your weight.
You can take drugs like atorvastatin or pravastatin to control your lipid levels. But it is prescription based medicine so consult your doctor and take treatment accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
