Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Had a HIDA scan this morning. Low EF (14%). Is there a chance it could improve? What is a normal EF rate? Could a problem with pancreas cause this type of problem with the gallbladder?

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

HIDA scan is a test done to evaluate gallbladder function and to look for bile duct blockage.
A normal result of test is a ejection fraction greater that 35 %.
Your result of EF 14 % is low and indicates a problem with your liver, gallbladder or biliary ducts. The most common causes are :
-Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis )
-Obstruction of bile ducts from gallstones
-Pancreas condition .
The result of this test is evaluated in the context of the clinical presentation (symptoms, physical examination),medical history and other test done before like abdominal ultrasound ,blood tests, CT scan etc.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
