What Does The MRI Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 May 2015
Question: What does this mean please? I had an MRI of my hips and this was part of the findings: Mild heterogeneity of marrow signal throughout the visualized axial and appendicular skeleton. The Impression states: Heterogeneous marrow signal, likely related to residual or reconversion hematopoietic marrow. Correlate with CBC.

Brief Answer:
Your bone marrow is showing areas of red bone marrow formation

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The bones are made up of bone marrow and they help in the formation of blood elements. In young adults the bone marrow is of red type and it generates red blood cells in good amounts. In the elderly men and women at your age, the bone marrow changes from red to yellow due to fat replacement which is a normal process.

2. Your MRI shows areas of mixture of red and yellow marrow in the bones visualized on the scan. This might mean that there is a change in blood cell generation and this is described as reconversion to hematopoietic marrow or red bone marrow.

3. To say if there is any abnormal generation of cells, you have to get complete blood count done and should there be any abnormality then it will be known.

4. This mixed pattern of bone marrow can also be seen in some normal people.

5. Please get complete blood count (CBC) done and discuss thel people.

5. Please get complete blood count (CBC) done and discuss the results with your doctor.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

I had a CBC and it was normal! Red and white blood cells in the normal range, and I went over that part with my doctor. Thank you for your answer.

I think what you said is: my bone marrow is making areas of red bone marrow. Therefore, that should be a good thing, correct?

Brief Answer:
Red marrow conversion is normal under following situations

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

1. Medical literature says that in normal adult marrow, yellow marrow may reconvert to red marrow in the event of a functional demand for increased hematopoiesis. Benign conditions triggering reconversion include heavy smoking, long distance running, obesity, and middle age in women.

2. Therefore your cause for reconversion to red bone marrow, which is of mild nature is a variation of the normal.

3. Since your CBC and peripheral blood smear is normal, there is no abnormality in red cell generation. It should have highlighted any important cause of bone marrow reconversion if there was any.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
