Question: Hello Doctor

Please find the attached lab reports. I am B12 deficient (188).

I recall I had been taking Gelusil for quite few years, for last 3 years I have completely stopped all anta-acid.

I am now on 60K IU D3 one tablet a month. Apart from this no other medication.

I would like to know if I consume Liver in my daily meal will that improve my b12

My doctor has advised to take injections to up the B12 level.

I wish to improve the levels via absorption level and not by injections/supplements. If supplements is the only way to go forward, let me start with it. I heard once we take supplements we have to live with it forever is that true?

Please Advise

Thanks
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Liver is good source of Vitamin B12, you can take this

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.

I have viewed the attached report,

First of all I will like say Vitamin B12 deficiency in you is only borderline and ony dietary changes can fulfill these levels especially if you dont have any symptoms like anemia (Your Haemoglobin is 15 in reports) or any neurological symptoms like numbness, parasthesia or sensory or motor weakness in any part of body.

Liver is good source of vitamin B12 and other source of good vitamin B12 are milk, dairy products, soy products, and some breakfast cereals and
breads, meat, and egg. And you can add these items also

Get your levels of vitamin B12 after 8 weeks. If they are ok then just continue with above mentioned diets. If still low then check for intrinsic factor antibody which is a blood tests if it comes out to be positive then the cause of deficiency of vitamin B12 is not lack of vitamin B12 in your diet and you will have to take injections.

Injection have to be taken once in 2-3 moths for whole life after the correction of level of vitamin B12 ,if the cause is other than dietary, that is malabsorption or presence of Intrinsic factor antibody which helps in absorption of Vitamin B12.

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you . Wish you a good health
