What Does The Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: I had an ultr sound and was told I have a ovarian cyst that is 7 cm. I had blood work done and that came back normal but I have notice my stomach rumbling and gurgling when I first lay down. Could this be related to my cyst?

Brief Answer:
Rumbling and gurgling in abdomen might be due to cyst in ovary

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. I regularly interpret ultrasound scans and have had patients with cysts in ovaries regularly including small and large ones.

2. An ovarian cyst up to 3 cm in size usually does not cause any problems in my experience with my patients.

3. With progressive increase in size, the cysts measuring 5 cm or more might cause mild abdominal discomfort and few also have pain.

4. The gargling and rumbling might be due to transition of fluids and contents in the bowel and might be related to the presence of bowel around the cyst. What happens is that there is mild pressure effect of the cyst on surrounding bowel that might be experienced as rumbling and gargling.

5. Please get your blood work done completely and discuss the findings with your doctor including screening blood tests for malignancy.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,

I had blood work done after we found the cyst and it came back normal. The only time my stomach rumbles is she I first lay down at night. I can feel gas bubbles and lots of rumbling. Should I call my ob to ask about this

Brief Answer:
Better to have a word with your doctor because your cyst is large in size

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Since your cyst is large sized and measures 7 cm therefore it will help to have a word with your doctor and get any complications due to the presence of the cyst ruled out.

2. The problem is larger cysts might cause pressure on the bowel to cause early features of bowel obstruction and also rarely can get twisted on its axis

3. If there is pain in the area at any time then please have an emergency consultation with your doctor.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
