What Does This CT Scan Indicate?
The CT scan showed the following:
. " Probably mild irregular wall thickening of the rectosigmoid colon."
What does that mean? I have been told that mild wall thickening could mean that it is benign.
Thickening of rectosigmoid colon
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXX
C T scan showed "probably mild irregular wall thickening of the rectosigmoid colon".
This means swelling or thickening of the wall of the rectum and sigmoid colon ( both are part of large intestine , above anus ), this is very small in size ( means mild form ).
You have been told that this may be due to some benign reason means NOT DANGEROUS to life ( not serious and most probably curable ) .
Thickening may be due to edema , tuberculosis ( some chronic infectious disease like ulcer in the wall of rectum and sigmoid colon ) or due to any trauma or idiopathic reason .
Biopsy report will narrate the exact reason of this thickening .
Hope this will help you .
Further any question I will reply in follow up.
Good luck.
I understand that a biopsy is the only way to rule out if it is malignant. But I guess what I'm asking, does the description sound like something that is more likely to be benign.
I've been told that it could be .... but the fact that there is bleeding worries me.
Rectosigmoid colon swelling

Hello XXXXXXX
Yes , in your case I can say that this thickening may be due to some BENIGN reason :
The size is very small ( C T scan clearly shows that this is mild ,it means very small ).
Irregular but small in size is also an indication that it may be due to ulcer or edema .
Bleeding per rectum ( anus ) means some ulcer type lesion or thickening or some chronic disease ( as these are most common at this age and above all curable ).Bleeding from large intestine ( rectum and sigmoid colon ) may be due to hemorrhoids also or fissure or any type of ulcer as mentioned above .
Usually large swelling or thickening may be serious or malignant .
Further any question I will reply.
Good luck.
