What Does This MRI Report Of Prostate Gland Indicate?

Prostatomegaly with subtle T2W hypointense area in peripheral zone near base of prostate
MRI scan might indicate a prostate cancer, suggested biopsy and PSA level
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
The prostate is a potato shaped gland located at the base of urinary bladder in males and has helps in secretion of prostatic fluid which is required for reproductive function. After the age of 60 years the prostate gets enlarged in most men and can cause difficulty in passing urine and increased frequency of urination.
Rarely in some men the prostate gland might develop cancer and then this condition must be diagnosed and treated on time.
I suppose you got a MRI of prostate gland done to know in detail any structural changes that are present. The MRI report shows an enlarged prostate with a dark area on T2W sequence in the peripheral zone which is suspicious for a cancer area. Cancer chances are more if the dark area on T2W is more than 5 mm in size and poorly defined and causing mass effect on surrounding prostate tissue.
It must be kept in mind that in MRI a dark area on T2W scan sequence can be a cancer in 80 percent of cases. Therefore 1 out of 5 people having this finding will not have cancer and 4 out of 5 people might have prostate cancer. This makes it important for you to get PSA level tested and a biopsy from the dark area to be done to evaluate if there is a cancer.
Even if there is cancer it is in the earliest stage and can be completely treated.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
