What Does This MRI Report Of Spine Indicate?
L5-S1: Loss internal disc signal with small central annular fissure
and protrusion.
MRI reports small lumbar disc,non-surgical treatment advised...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through the MRI report you provided and I can say as following:
- there is a bulging disc at T12-L1 level= there is a swollen intervertebral disc, small in size. This size won't cause pressure on the nerve roots.
So, it won't cause any problem. However, it should be under observation.
- Protrusion noted at L5-S1 is describing a lumbar hernia small in size. The fissure noted is referring to the tearing of herniation.
Depending on the symptoms you have, it will be decided on treatment. In cases of small hernia (as in your case), non-surgical treatment is advised. However, if your symptoms would be aggravated, discectomy might be advised.
Hope it was of help!

Disc degeneration associated with bulging of spinal sac...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
Thank you for following up.
There is nothing serious going up there. It is true that medical terms are sometimes confounding, but that does not mean that there is something wrong.
In simply words, there is a disc between the vertebral bones (called intervertebral disc). In your case, this disc is slightly dislocated (not at the normal site) and slightly swollen (protrusion).
With regards to "loss of internal disc signal", it is a sign of disc degeneration. In other words, the disc tissue is dehydrated, therefore, no signal is obtained from MRI. Disc degeneration is part of aging process.
This disc degeneration is accompanied by bulging of spinal sac, which carries the nerves to the legs and pelvis. This also explains your symptoms: back pain coming down to your legs.
I advise to consult with neurologist to discuss about specific treatment in your case.
Hope it was of help! If no more queries, do not forget to close this discussion!
