What Does This Biopsy Report Indicate?

Question: i had an endometrial biopsy and was diagnosed with invasive endometrioid adenocarcinoma which I understand is the most common and indolent. However, my GYN said I have a "little more aggressive type of cancer." The biopsy report shows: Tumor consists of crowded elongated and irregular tubules surrounded by an inflamed and markedly fibrosed stroma. Papillary groupings are also seen and tumor cells appear crowded and tall columnar with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and overlapping hyperchormatic nuclei. Variation in nuclear size and shape is minimal and anaplastic forms are not seen. Squamous metaplasia appears prominent and endometrial glandular hyperplasia ranging to complex with atypia is evident as well. Nonneoplastic lower endometrial mucosal tissues are rarely seen. So...what does this mean: papillary Ca, serous Ca.

Brief Answer:
Probably mixed: Endometroid and serous>

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I have reviewed these histopathological features. I know you are worried, which is totally understandable. However, this is the best thing to know that the cause has been identified and treatment would soon be instituted.

The features, put together, are suggestive of a mixed cancer type: endometroid and serous cancerous features.

While the prognosis of this type is not as excellent as others, endometrial cancer when diagnosed early remains one of the easily and completely treatable cancers.

I hope this addresses your worries fully. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Thank you very much. Serous was my concern too.

I see a GYN/Oncologist on Monday locally and then I'm getting a second opinion in St XXXXXXX on Wednesday and plan to have surgery scheduled ASAP.

Thanks again - not the news I wanted but I want complete honesty so I can make the most informed decision about my care.
