What Does This Blood Culture Report Indicate?
Question: Hi Dr.
My Son was born on 22nd July 2015 and As he had fever, they sent blood for testing of bilirubin on 24th july. Along with bilirubin they also did Blood Culture, and in that report they found Acinetobacter lwoffii which is sensitive to
Cefotxime
Ceftazidime
Amikacin
Gentamicin
Ciprofloxacin
Levofloxacin
Co-trimoxazole and
Cefepime
Today on 8th August I got the reports and my Pediatrician is saying that there is nothing to worry about. What do you think?
Additional Info:
His Bilirubin on 24th July was 12.7 and on 25th it was 12.4.
They concluded that he had Dehydration Fever because my wife was not lactating enough. But since 24th he never had fever.

Brief Answer:
Dehydration is the likely cause.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
I understand your concern.
Your child probably seems to have physiological jaundice of newborn.
This will gradually resolve on its own.
Your Doctor might have attributed the possible reasons of fever.
Now since your child seems to improve and there is no fever ,you need not worry much.
Regular breast feeding will help.
Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
This bacterium does not require routine antibiotic therapy
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir.
I understand your concern.
Acinetobacter Iwoffii is a normal flora of the skin, oral cavity and perineum of health adults.
It causes diseased states only in presence of low immune status of the body.
Hence it does not require routine antibiotic therapy in healthy newborns.
The antibiotics you mentioned are needed only when this bacterium causes profound sepsis ,which usually occurs in immune-compromised children.
