What Does This Blood Report Indicate?
Question: I wrote to someone yesterday but I am repeating my question since I have new information. I am a white 75 year old female who just received blood work results from routine exam. My doctor is on vacation and his office only called me to report high cholesterol. I looked at the chart and noticed I might have a lymph problem so I showed the chart to my neighbor who had been my physician for 40 years before retiring. He became alarmed about the high percentage and made an appointment for me to see a hematologist next week because based on the chart both of them feel that I probably have CLL. When I questioned this because the WBC is normal, the neighbor said, "What else could it be?" I am hoping there is something else it could be. Looking for loop holes. At the time of the blood draw I had a rather bad cold with lots of sneezing and runny nose. Is it possible that the lymph number went up due to the virus? No fever. I have no nodes and liver and spleen seem okay. Here is the blood work below. Do you have an opinion on any other possible diagnosis? 18 months ago abs lymph was 2.4 and percent was 42%.

It is some diseases linked to high level of lymphocytes includeing chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The good news for you is that you haven't have symptoms of this disease like fatigue, fever, enlarged but painless lymph nodes, weight lose etc. A high lymphocyte count can be caused by viral infection, vasculitis, whooping cough and several other reasons.
My opinion is to wait for your doctor. Maybe you need further work-ups to be sure that everything is okay. You need to have more specific tests like peripheral blood smear, flow cytometry test (important) in diagnosing CLL blood immunoglobulin level to check if you have recently any infection.
