What Does This Blood Test Report Showing Decreased MCV Indicate?
Question: I just got the results back from my yearly blood test. My MCV was 73, MCH 23.2 and RDW 17.1. What could those numbers mean?

Brief Answer:
Possible iron-deficiency anemia...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,
Thank you for uploading your lab tests results.
I have gone through the reports you uploaded and noticed these minor changes (within acceptable range to my opinion):
- MCV (mean corpuscular volume) = average size for red blood cell. If low level noticed, it is suggesting for microcytic anemia.
- MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) = hemoglobin amount for red blood cell. If low levels are noticed, it is indicating for hypochromic anemia.
- RDW (red cell distribution width) = measures variation in red blood cell size/volume. If it is raised, it might indicate deficiency anemia (showing lack in iron, vit.b12, folate).
At the end, your blood test reports mild iron deficiency anemia. I am not concerned about these findings as I find them slightly decreased from the normal range. If I was your caring doctor would advise to consume more foods rich in iron, folate, vit.b12 and to repeat the tests after 3 months.
Take good control of diabetes and kidney stones too.
Hope it answered to your queries! Let me know if you have more questions!
