What Does This Complete Work-up For Left Abdominal Pain Indicate?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: I have just had a complete work-up for left abdominal pain/burning. A swallowed camera study showed no problems except for "redness" in the duodenum area. I feel that a burning and it wakes me up at night and has done that for over a year. My gastroenterologist does not feel it is not serious, but I would like to know what is causing it and what I can do about it. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Need more of your medical data,,

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

First, I need to have a look at the results of your complete work-up for left abdominal pain/burning. From what you are describing, duodenitis is suspected.

Next, I need to know if you are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications recently?

Did the testing include the test for H.pylori?

Do you use alcohol? If yes, on regular basis or occasionally?

I need to have these information first before giving a final opinion!

In reply to your questions:
1. I do not use NASIDs on a regular basis. Lately I only take a Tylenol, if needed.
2. I did not have an H Pylori test.
3. I use very little alcohol. Once or twice a week I have a glass of wine and sometimes I dilute it with water.
I have not worn a bra lately, only a camisole as I have swelling in my stomach region. Bras are too tight.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for providing additional information.

If you have not done any H.pylori test so far, I highly recommend to discuss with your doctor to run it. We should understand what is causing redness (inflammation) of duodenum.

Possible causes apart H.pylori infection might be related to recent viral infection you had.

However, the redness in your duodenum from what you are describing, does not seem a cause for serious issues.
I advise to:
- try to follow a healthy diet : less calories, less spicy/chilly/caffeine, etc.
- start taking probiotics
- take PPIs (e.g. omeprazole or pantoprazole), ranitidine at bedtime and antacids after meals in order to try to reverse inflammation caused by stomach hyperacidity.

Hope it was of help!
