What Does This Lipid Profile Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,
Two days back I did lipid profile test as a doctor (Ophthalmologist) suggested me to do that after checking my eyes. Report says
triglycerides are 313 mg/dL
Cholesterol total 188 mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol 38 mg/dL
LDL Cholesterol (Direct, homogeneous) 87.3 mg/dL
VLDL Cholesterol (Calculated) 62.6 mg/dL .
CHOL/HDL ratio 4.9.

Can you please check the report and provide your comments? Do you think any other tests needs to be done to find out any underlying body problem? What should be my diet to bring triglycerides to normal level?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Life style changes / repeat some tests after 2 months /

Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic

But for some minor changes, most of the tests are normal
Blood counts, functions of Liver, Kidney, Thyroid – all normal
________________________________________________________
Bilirubin is 1.1 / here, the upper limit is given as 1 – most lab references are up to 1.5
Nothing to worry / repeat it after a month or two…
__________________________________________________
Only uric acid is on the higher side – Drink plenty of water, avoid red meat, reduces pulses and repeat after a month… if still high, you may need drugs.
__________________________________________________
Triglyceride is high / The level is not alarming – Normal = less than 150 / Borderline = 150 to 199.
High = 200 to 499 / Very high = 500 or higher.
12 to 14-hour fasting is necessary for proper interpretation

It is generally genetic [inherited /running in family]
Obesity / Diabetes / Thyroid insufficiency / Alcohol / over eating / some drugs like Beta-blockers / Diuretics are occasionally responsible…

Eat fewer calories / Limit natural sugars:
Eat small, frequent meals and do not skip meals
Avoid late-night snacking
Add omega-3 fats in your diet
– fatty fish (like mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna) twice or more in a week
– soy foods, canola oil, flax seeds and walnuts / limit potatoes, yams, beans, corn and peas

LDL is border line, not very low - no worry / may come up with regular exercise

Lose weight if you are overweight
Do regular physical activity – at least half an hour a day / 5 days in a week
Repeat the tests in 2 to 3 months
_________________________________________
Yo sum up – nothing serious / Need Life style changes / Need to repeat after 1 or 2 months / no need for further tests now
Consult a dietician for Triglyceride and uric acid lowering dier

Good luck
God bless you
