What Does This Report Regarding Stage IIIA Esophageal Cancer Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 22 Jul 2014
Question: My husband has stage IIIA esophageal cancer. After proton radiation treatment 2 weeks ago he fell at the hospital splitting his head. They took a head ct. The report contained the below language:

"There is a well-circumscribed lytic lesion within the occipital bone, likely a benign lesion, such as a vascular lake."

What does this mean?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Bone destroyed..not by cancer!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you s much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your husband is going through. I wish him the best of every possible outcome.

Lytic......from lysis.... means destroyed
Benign,.......means Not cancer
These results mean that the occipital bone is destroyed, probably by a process not caused by cancer. This means we cannot say it is a metastases from the oesophageal cancer that is responsible for this. This carries a good prognosis compared to that caused by a cancerous process.

I hope this helps. I wish your husband well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be.

Bone destroyed? Would this have been caused by his fall or just aging?

Brief Answer:
None of the above!

Detailed Answer:
The results suggest that this has been caused by blood leaking into it.

It is not cause by his fracture and not caused by aging.

I hope this helps. I wish you both well. Let me know if there is something more you want us to talk about at this point.

Cheers!

Thank you for your answers and well wishes. I have one more follow-up:

What would cause this and why isnt it a concern? My husband's on his 4th round of cancer since 1980: hodgkins stage iia: 2002 nonhodgkins stage iv, found in liver; 2003: melanoma; 2014: esophageal. In 2001 he had a "3mm lucency near his right hepatic lobe, but its probably a benign finding" per the ct report that was taken due to pericarditis and 10 months later he had a 4 inchtumor in the right lobe of his liver. I get concerns when a report reads: "likely" or "probably" benign.
Any suggestions or input to ease my mind? Thank yoi again

Brief Answer:
I understand your fears!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for this follow up precision.

It is true that experts can get it wrong on exam interpretation. With all the cancers he has had, it would have been more convincing to hear that this is caused by one of the cancers.

With the past experience about the liver tumor and cancer, your worries are even stronger. I will suggest that you ask your doctors why the think this is not caused by a malignant lesion given the multiple cancers that he has suffered from. This will open the doors for more communication and discussion about this subject.

I wish your husband well and hope this helps.
