What Does This Ultrasound Report Suggest?

Posted on Fri, 14 Aug 2015
Question: I need an opinion if my pregnancy will go okay or should i be worried I go to doctors tomorrow but i went to hospital just to get an ultrasound done so I said I had pelvic pain....I told tem my last period was 6-6-15 they told me I was 5weeks 3days.When they completed the ultrasound this is what the findings were...uterus is anteverted measuring. 9.2×4.6×6.1cm...there is an abnormal appearing intrauterine presumed gestational sac which shows some internal septations and irregular crenulated margins. Based on mean sac diameter, gestational age estimate 5weeks 3 days. No yok sac or embryo identified. Right and Left ovary normarl and moderate fluid in cul-de-sac....
Then it says impression:
Presumed intrauterine gestational sac without yok or embryo identified. If indeed a gestational sac it is abnormal in apperance, suspicious for missed abortion. Given lack of visual of embryo or yok sac follow up with serial hcg and ultrasound is recommended to EXCLUDE EARLY INTRAUTERINE PREGNANCY OR ECTOPIC PREGNANCY....are they saying exclude the possibility of me having a baby please answer with details....thank you

Brief Answer:
Repeat ultrasound after one week.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

There is a bit of confusion here. If your LMP is 6-6-15 then you are now 7 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Pregnancy age is calculated from the date of last period.

May be there was late ovulation. I presume that this is your first ultrasound and it was transvaginal ultrasound.
At 5 weeks 3 days the gestational sac is usually CLEARLY seen by transvaginal ultrasound. The yolk sac should be seen by 5 weeks 5 days. The embryo is seen at 6 weeks. Irregular shape and septations in the gestational sac are of concern. They suggest that probably the pregnancy is not growing normally.

I suggest you to repeat ultrasound after one week. By then you must see yolk sac and embryo by transvaginal ultrasound.

If this is your second ultrasound please send me the first ultrasound report. Then the interpretation will be different.
I hope this helps.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.

Brief Answer:
Tomorrows Ultrasound should show embryo with heart activity.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
If this was the ultrasound done 2 weeks ago, then it is acceptable. As mentioned above embryo and yolk sac may not be seen at 5 weeks 3 days pregnancy.

When you do the ultrasound tomorrow, embryo with heart activity must be seen.
I hope this helps.
