What Is The Cause And Treatment For Reynaud's Syndrome?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 May 2014
Question: My daughter has had some fainting spells off and on for last few years. She is 19 and when we went to one doctor he recognized that she had Reynaud's Syndrome but she has not had any more testing. I just read that this is an autoimmune disease and am worried this passing out is related. Who should I take her to as she is getting ready to go to Europe and not sure I can get her in to anyone before she goes?
The doctor that recognized the Reyanauds also suggested her getting a hearing test. He did the old way of using the metal instrument, and said she had some hearing loss. We went to a local place as we live in a rural area and she sat in an booth that looked like it was from the 60's and was placed directly across from person testing her. She said she felt like he was almost telling her to raise her hand when he looked at her. The hearing test said she was fine?
One more thing. I recently read about head trauma. She used to fall out of her bed at night when she was younger and even once fell off a bunk bed when she was sleeping. She never complained of anything and seemed fine at time so didn't think too much of it. Could any of this also be related to her passing out?

Brief Answer:
Needs further testing and proper diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I would not comment too much about the Raynaud's Syndrome. It may or may not be related. It needs further testing. Autoimmune disorders will be in the primary list of possibilities.

As far as I know Raynaud's always had triggering factors like change in temperature or emotions. You were not giving any such history in your daughter's case.

Raynaud's is more in small arteries and capillaries where as the lightheadedness and fainting spells happen because of spasm of larger or medium sized arteries. Head trauma would not cause these instances after so long time. However it is better to check for chronic subdural hematomas with a CT scan head.

Raynaud's syndrome has other pathologies like biliary cirrhosis, systemic sclerosis as well. Hearing loss was not described yet.

You should take her to Rheumatol/ogist for specific tests in the nearby city.
