What Is The Cause And Treatment For Urticaria?

Posted on Thu, 15 May 2014
Question: Hi, my skin seems to have an increased inflammatory response for the last 6 months? It started with itching that would come and go in random spots on my body, usually when I get home, after showering, if I wear shorts to beds. Symptoms diminish if I wear pants to bed. It started on my scalp (I had sores that looked like pimples without a whitehead, but just looked like red spots on scalp) but went away after I changed conditioner. At the same time I changed conditioner, I noticed itching all over my body.

I have a stressful job. I'm in healthcare but not medical. It's hard for me to ask for help with this. I thought an allergen or stress would be the cause for the symptoms. I am concerned about organ damage because I've Been drinking alcohol to cope with my anxiety for a while. 1-3 glasses of wine per night. I keep trying to quit drinking; it lasts about a month before I start again. If I scratch at my skin, or pop a blackhead , it now turns into a welt. Same thing with a scratch on my leg. I am a 35 y/o female. No previous health issues. If I seek assistance through my PCP, I could lose my job. No previous health issues other than a depression episode years ago after my father died, melasma, and painful periods. The inflammation is worsening. Is this a big deal? What do you think?

Brief Answer:
urticaria and its treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

I have read your query and understood your concern.

It seems that you are suffering from a condition called urticaria. It is an allergic condition of skin characterized by appearance of red itchy transient eruptions over body. This allergy can be due to number of allergens which may include any food , seasonal variation, hot or cold, sunlight, any medication or recent infection and many more.

You should try to observe and look for any aggravating factor or precipitating factor for the same.

I usually advice my patients to take tab allegra in the morning and levocetrizine in night time for atleast 2 weeks. Along with try to avoid the aggravating factors if any. Since you link the symptoms to the bed, perhaps something on the bed cause it - try changing the linen or the mattress.

I will also advice you to take it easy and don't panic. It is usually limited to skin. If at all, only thing is asthma is commonly found in such patients. Otherwise it wont affect your body organ.

But alcohol will definitely cause harm to your body . It will aggravate your ongoing skin condition and may damage your liver.

I will advice you not to worry so much . You may start the treatment with firm belief. But promise yourself and me that you won't take alcohol for your worries and stress. It is solution for nothing.

So I will again advice you to start taking treatment with strong will to leave alcohol.

I hope it helps.
If you have any further query you may ask me.
