If remnants of pus cells remain then they can recollect and cause another infection. IF the lesion was no painful, it would have been possible that it was scar tissue that had formed where the previous abscess had been located. This is not uncommon however scar tissue is not painful. After it has softened and is ready to discharge, your doctor can open it and break down any pus walls. Even if it bursts at home, it is still best to visit your doctor because a small amount of pus can remain that needs to be removed. Antibiotics may also be needed.
