What Is The Effect Of Smoking When Taking Radio Active Iodine?

Question: hi... I have been suffering from Hyper thyroid for the past 2 years. On Saturday i have taken Radio active iodine 131 I. I am on leave for 7 days due to my treatment. I would like to know , what are the diets have to be taken, what are the ingredients to be avoided. When can i initiate my travel and how often can i travel to places. I have been smoking since 5 years. After radio active iodine i stopped smoking. Can i smoke occasionaly or shall i quit on immediate effect. Kindly advice me.

I understand your concerns. See the detailed answers.

1. Since radio iodine treatment is over, no strict dietary modifications are needed. Still it will be better to have a low iodine diet till hyperthyroidism is settled.

2. Travel after radio iodine treatment is allowed after 2 weeks of iodine intake. This is to prevent the risk of radiation to others who are in close contact with you.

3. Smoking is avoided in hyperthyroidism to decrease the risk of thyroid eye disease ( Graves ophthamopathy- or protrusion of eyes). It don't have any effect on hyperthyroidism or radio iodine treatment. Even after radio iodine treatment the risk of thyroid eye disease is there, so it is better to quit smoking.
