What Is The Effect Of Smoking When Taking Radio Active Iodine?
No diet modifications, Better to quit smoking
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Welcome to HCM. Thanks for posting this question.
I understand your concerns. See the detailed answers.
1. Since radio iodine treatment is over, no strict dietary modifications are needed. Still it will be better to have a low iodine diet till hyperthyroidism is settled.
2. Travel after radio iodine treatment is allowed after 2 weeks of iodine intake. This is to prevent the risk of radiation to others who are in close contact with you.
3. Smoking is avoided in hyperthyroidism to decrease the risk of thyroid eye disease ( Graves ophthamopathy- or protrusion of eyes). It don't have any effect on hyperthyroidism or radio iodine treatment. Even after radio iodine treatment the risk of thyroid eye disease is there, so it is better to quit smoking.
Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you.
