What Is The Lifespan When Having Dilated Cardiomyopathy?
Question: Hello Doctor, I'm a 36 year old woman that has always been in good health. However 2 years ago I went to the ER because I was short of breath, and X-rays showed I had a lot of fluid around my heart and lungs so I was hospitalized and given diuretics. My blood pressure was also very high 210/130 so I was also given medications to lower my blood pressure. After having an echocardiogram it was determined that my ejection fraction was at only 18% and I was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy and CHF. My question, is what is the average life span of someone with my diagnosis?
Brief Answer:
Dependence on the maintenance
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
The conditions you were diagnosed though affect the life span can be reversed to some extent. On an average with good maintenance via regular checkups and medications a person can live around 15 to 20 years. Any condition which aggravates the cardiac dysfunction or worsens the cardiomyopathy like infections especially in the lungs can reduce the life expectancy.
Have you got checked recently, if yes please do share the report with me. I shall opine on the prognosis of your condition based on the same.
