What Is The Normal Blood Sugar Range?

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Sep 2015
Question: What are the range-levels of blood sugar that are normal, good, not good-above normal range, dangerous & extremely dangerous. My brother said that he quit testing his blood sugar because he didn't know what to do if it was high. What triggered the question was that my brother was out of town for 4 days & did not have his Victoza pen with him (because it has to be kept cool & he did not expect to be gone more than one day). I don't know what to tell him is dangerously high OR what to do about it.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Diabetes

Detailed Answer:
I follow your question.

Diabetes care is best individualized so most often the glucose targets vary from person to person.

But in general these are the broad guidelines:

When blood glucose levels checked on a meter at home/work, in the fasting state (ie before breakfast) and before each meal during the daytime such as before lunch and before dinner are in the range of :

65 to 99 : normal

100 to 130: good control

131 to 160 : moderately above normal

161 to 200: not good

200 to 250 : high

more than 250: high enough to be dangerous

If he has symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting or disorientation, he must be taken to the ER immediately.

Regarding what can be done about it, insulin can lower glucoses quickly but it requires extensive experience in use and training too. It is best to contact his diabetes care provider for instructions on how to manage high glucoses at home.
