What Is The Prognosis For Hiatal Hernia Despite Taking PPI, Statins And Synthroid?

Question: I have a large hiatal hernea, and severe reflux. I am currently taking 40mg of a ppi per day, and some times twice a day on my doctor's instructions. I also take a statin, synthroid, a daily migraine medicine, and an ssri. My dad has recently been diagnosed with non-alcholic liver disease, and all of the commercials about kidney disease with the ppi's are scaring me. How concerned should I be? I take all the meds for good reasons, and am also afraid to stop them.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry, PPI are well tolerated and you should be safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for asking at HealthcareMagic.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

It is normal to worry about side effects of medications especially reading about them really causes a fright. But in your case, taking PPI is quite safe. PPI are medications proved to be safe to take for long times and are well tolerated by patients, they do not interact much with other medications and cause side effects in less than 5% of patients which is similar to taking an empty pill (placebo).

I would say that you are safe to use PPI in therapeutic doses and you should not be at risk for major side effects.

I think it is good you are not stopping the medications yourself as this might cause you a lot of discomforts and also some drugs like SSRI you are not supposed to stop abruptly or you might worsen a lot.

So to conclude I would say:
1. it is safe to take PPI for a long time and you will not be a major risk for kidney problems or other problems as they are well tolerated
2. it is good you do your regular checks (especially taking statins for lipids)- this will confirm that you are doing well
3. continue the rest of medications as your doctor has recommended you and don't do abrupt changes or stopping them abruptly unless you develop a severe allergy to them.

I hope the is helpful and answers your question but please feel free to write me in case any more clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,
