What Is The Relationship Between Menopause, Estrogen And Osteoporosis?
Menopause therefore is a consequence of estrogen deficiency. Estrogen is primarily made by the ovaries and they stop making this hormone around the age of 52 years in most women.
However if the ovaries fail to produce estrogen for any other reason, that will also result in a menopausal state. Such conditions include surgical removal of ovaries (as during surgery for pelvic tumors or large ovarian cysts etc) or radiation injury (as occurs sometimes during irradiation to the pelvis as part of cancer treatment0 or chemical damage (as may occur with chemotherapy for cancer). If such damage occurs before the normal average age of 52 it is considered earlier than normal. If it occurs before the age of 45 then it is called premature menopause.
Estrogen also prevents bone loss. Its deficit in the human body weakens bone density and can cause osteoporosis.
