default
Posted on Fri, 20 Jun 2014
Question: I am a liver donor and got coarse hepatic parenchyma in my USG today and spleen enlargement (12.5 cm). Transplant had taken place on 26th february and I feel fine. What is the treatment for this parenchyma? Diet control or whatever it takes, I wish to perfect like before.

Brief Answer:
liver will eventually get back to normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in.

I have read through your query in detail.
As it is 3 months since you donated your liver and there are no other problems you are facing like bile leaks, hernias and infections, there is no need to worry. Liver donors are followed up to look for certain complications and most of these are treatable.

If you did not have any liver problems earlier and went through all tests before liver donation then there is no possibility of getting any liver disease which can cause parenchymal alteration indicative of any diffuse liver disease. In ultrasound the liver appearance can get subjective, besides the liver cells are also regenerating in you. This can cause slightly distorted architecture which is not significant from any disease point of view. The liver will eventually get back to normal.

The spleen size at 12.5 can be said to be at upper limits of normal and may be acceptable in most patients.

There are many donors who get psychological problems after donating part of their liver. I reassure you that if you do not have any other problems then you are dong fine and are normal as before.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubt.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Brief Answer:
Single drink allowed

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
You are welcome and thanks for writing back with an update.

A single drink of alcohol will do no harm but if you take alcohol regularly then it might have a negative effect on your liver function as it still needs time to regenerate completely.

Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
