Question: is it poisonous if one drinks dettol hand wash?What is the treatment

Such type of hand washes have generally more than 70% of alcohol in them.
Consumption of a small amount by even a child also doesnt cause any problem but if the amount is large,which is generally unlikely because of the awful taste,then it can cause alcoholic poisioning along with gastrointestinal effects and general effects like breathing problem,confusion etc.
If the amount consumed is large,then the person should be immediately taken to ER for gastric lavage,which involves cleaning of stomach by putting a tube through nose.It is better to be safe rather than feeling sorry later on.
Till you go to ER,you can give an antacid syrup like GELUSIL 15-20 ml for neutralising the acidic effects of the hand wash.
