Which Treatment Is Good For Erythema Multiforma Or Hives?
Question: hi does acupuncture help with erthyme multiforme or Hives? japanese woman 36 yrs old good health 170 cms 53 kgs . do high levels of stress bring on bouts of this very itchy skin rash that looks like hives, but the diagnosis in Japan was erythme multiform. that was treated with steroids and antihistamines and it cleared up but a "milder" form has since reappeared as an itchy rash, not the large red welts of the original condition. Patient (my wife) has extremely sensitive skin. she is now taking "Brecrus" an antihistamine to no effect. thinking of seeking alternative treatment such as acupuncture.
If acupuncture does not offer a treatment option do you have any recommendations as to either topical or systemic treatments to at least curtail the itch. Research suggests this condition will resolve itself, over time but that does nothing to alleviate the itch which is very debilitating. we are in japan so that locale will be to be taken into account re any prescriptions that may be offered.
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
Erythema multiforma is a common lesion in women seen in winter or spring. There is a well established treatment for this condition in chinese medicine which has proven to be effective in many patients. It involves both XXXXXXX as well as external treatment by acupuncture.
Such allergy induced rashes are controlled in allopathy only by antiallergics and steroids. Prevention is better than treatment in skin rashes.
Most simple rashes improve with gentle skin care and avoiding irritating substances. You can help the improvement by
* Avoid scrubbing your skin.
* Use as little soap as possible. Use gentle cleansers instead.
* Avoid applying cosmetic lotions or ointments directly on the rash.
* Use warm (not hot) water for cleaning. XXXXXXX dry, don't rub.
* Eliminate any newly added cosmetics or lotions.
* Leave the affected area exposed to the air as much as possible.
* Try calamine medicated lotion.
* Hydrocortisone cream (1%) is available without a prescription and may soothe many rashes.
I hope my answer and recommendations are adequate and helpful. Waiting for your further follow up queries if any.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Thank you Doctor, will give acupuncture a go. Does Alovera afford any relief to the itchiness. The itchiness is driving her crazy! Can you recommend any salve at all given the rash will run its course? It will naturally resolve? If one gets it once how likely is a reoccurrence? Does sunlight help or hinder the healing?
Hello,
Thanks for writing again.
Aloe vera does decrease the itchiness. You can also use calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching.
These rashes resolve with changing the environment or place. It is not likely to resolve on its own with time.
Recurrence is common.
Sunlight has got no effect on increasing the healing. Rather it can precipitate the erythema.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Wishing you a trouble free speedy recovery.
