Will Norethisterone Stop Period Once Bleeding Started?
Question: Hi, thanks for looking at my query. I had a Mirena fitted about a year ago after my periods, while still regular, became very heavy after unsucessful IVF. Im also Type 1 Diabetic and 43. It has not been as successful with me as it has with my friends. Although lighter, my periods can still sometimes be heavy and not as regular. i had a hormone level test and nothing to indicate menopause but told im probably pre menopausal. I had been prescribed Norethisterone prior to the Merina as a backup as i was entering a triathlon but didnt need to use it. I am cycling 1000kms in May over a week and im desperate not to get my period then. Can i use Norethisterone to stop the period start during that week? i have also been described cyklokapron by another GP in the same practice but i dont like the sound of it. Thank you
Brief Answer:
Progesterone for postponing periods
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
Cyklokapron is Tranexamic acid which is to reduce bleeding.
Norethisterone is a progesterone which you can start few days before the anticpated menstural periods and continue it till the Cycling is over. Your periods will happen after you stop Norethiterone ( withdrawal bleeding).
Wish you good luck with Cycling. Please make sure your diabetes is under control during Cycling. Check blood glucose in between to avoid hypoglycemia.
