10 Moths Baby With Raised Levels Of Ast And Alt Liver Enzymes. What These Enzyme Levels Suggest ?

Please help. My ten month old baby son is having continued regular blood tests due to raised levels of ast and alt liver enzymes. What do these reflect? He started to have blood tests done when he was having some fit-like episodes during crying at 2-4 months old. He has not had those episodes since. He then had some tests done following a non-blanching leg rash at nearly 6 months. They showed raised levels of ast and alt. The rash went with ointment within 48 hrs. He has continued to have these blood tests and be examined by a paedeatrician. In March AST was 95 and in May AST was 64. In May, ALT was 31 and gamma GT was 13. Please can you help explain. The paedeatrician says he is very healthy and developing well. He is a very sharp, happy and adventurous baby. We would like to know what these enzyme levels are suggesting in a baby.

hi! thanks
see as u have told the child had fits earlier in life & he never then developed them ---this is just because the dr must have put him on anti epileptic medicines . the reports show slight rise & fall of liver enzymes--ast /alt which is because of these medicines & their dosages . these are metabolized through liver & if not properly monitored can affect the liver --- therefor e just to monitor the sideeffect sof the medines these repeat tests are being done

Thanks for taking the time to offer advice. I'm afraid this is not the case - our baby was never given any medication for his small fit-like episodes - it was not necessary at all. They were just closely monitored and recorded.

You suggest that there is only a light rise and fall in the liver enzymes - what would be a normal level for a baby of these ages?

What kind of medication can cause these changes?

Would it be anything to do with his breastmilk? I am still breastfeeding him now. He is also on a full solid diet.

Thanks for your information.
