Hi Doctor, My son, aged 11 years have had 3-4 seizures and on advise from a Neurologist and abnormal awake EEG record showed generalised seizure disorder. He was advised to take Eption 100 mg 3tabs a day and 1 Folic Acid . Checked with another Neurologist for a 2nd opinion and was told to take Tab Sod. Valproate (200 mg) 2 tabs a day along with Folic Acid tab. Please advise which one is better with least side affects.

Hi,
Tablet Eptoin(phenytoin) may be best suited in your case. For generalised seizure Eptoin is the First choice of drug and sodium valproate is the second choice of drug. Though both drugs have side effects, sodium valproate is 2nd line of choice due to the fear of Hepatic (liver) toxicity in young children.
These side effects occur only on prolonged use or at very high doses.
While using eptoin, oral hygiene must be well maintained due to risk of Gum hypertrophy. Periodic Monitoring of blood sugar level is essential.
Take care.
