2 Year Old With Severe Cough And Low Grade Fever. Could This Be A Viral Infection?

I have a 2 year old son who had a very intense cough come on out of nowhere two nights ago. Cough is almost non existant during the day. He fought a low grade fever yesterday & today I noticed 3 red spots on his tongue that almost looked like a burn . No fever, is this all just a virus? Very little appetite , fussy difficult time sleeping.

Hi Sarahslandry,
Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post,it seems that yor child is having upper respiratory tract infection.
The cause can be viral or bacterial and can be confirmed by some investigations like :-
1. Throat swab culture.
2. Complete Blood Count(CBC).

Red spots can be related to the fever and needs clinical examination.
You should get him examined clinically by his Paeditrician.

He can be given antihistaminic like levocetrizine for cough and paracetamol for fever.
Any medicine to be given after discussing with his Paeditrician.
Encourage him to drink lots of pure water and to eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

Furthur treatment can be planned according to the reports of the investigations.

I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.

Pediatrician Dr. Sanjay Sharma's  Response
MOST LIKELY IT IS VIRAL COUGH ONLY. MORE LIKELY SO IF ASSOCIATED WITH RUNNY NOSE & OR RED EYES. NIGHT COUGH IS MOST LIKELY SECONDARY TO POST NASAL DRIP OF NASAL MUCOUS .
MILD NIGHT COUGH OFTEN LAST FOR 2-3 WEEKS FOLLOWING VIRAL COUGH.
IF AFTER 1 WEEK OR SO COUGH IS WORSENING, ASSOCIATED WITH EAR PAIN, EAR DISCHARGE, PUFFY EYES , RECURRENCE OF HIGH FEVER, FREQ VOMITINGS ,FAST OR DIFFICULT BREATHING, CONSULT YOUR PEDIATRICIAN TO RULE OUT SERIOUS RESPIRATORY ILLNESS WHICH MIGHT NEED ANTIBIOTICS OR OTHER SPECIFIC THERAPY.

Hello Sarah...
All these symptoms suggest that your child might be suffering from upper respiratory tract infection(most probably viral infection)

The management consists of:
1. Drinking of warm fluids to reduce throat pain
2. Antihistamines to provide symptomatic relief from cold & cough.
3. Antitussive syrups to take care of the cough.
4. Analgesics to take care of pain & fever

So...it will be better to consult the pediatrician & start treatment.
Wishing your son a speedy recovery.
Thanks & take care.

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The symptoms that you have described are likely to be related to a viral infection which is usually associated with a rash , fever and dry cough. Most of the times such infections are self limiting and improve with good supportive treatment.
