20 Weeks Pregnant, Scan Showed Fetus With Hemi Vertebrae At Thorasic Spine And Blocked Vertebrae At Lumbar Spine. Risks Involved?
MY wife is 20 weeks pregnant and the fetus has been diagnosed with hemi vertebrae at thorasic spine and blocked vertebrae at lumbar spine. All the other reports are normal and there is no nuerological problem detected as of now. We also went under MRI Scan and it also tells the same. We are in mixed reviews from the doctors which has put us under a fix whether to terminate the pregnancy or to continue. what exactly is the risk involved as we do not want the child to go through surgeries
Risk associated with these findings are difficult to predict. Many children are diagnosed with hemivertebra incidentally and they may not have any symptoms. The prognosis is directly related to the presence or absence of associated anomalies, especially skeletal/heart abnormalities. The prognosis of isolated hemivertebra is good.
Some babies with similar findings and associated spine/other skeletal abnormalities have muscle weakness/paralysis of either both legs/one leg, may be associated with urination/motion difficulties.
