Dear Sally Thanks for posting your query here at Healthcaremagic. Respiratory tract infections are common infection in first five years of life. Data worldwide has shown that most children suffer about 5-6 episodes of cough/cold/respiratory tract infection per year till 5-6 years of age. After that, with growth and development of immunity etc - the frequency of infection decreases. Unless he had severe lung/breathing issues associated with premature birth, there is usually no direct correlation between premature birth and lung issues/recurrent infections. It is quite possible that he suffers from allergy leading to recurrent cough and cold and then he gets an infection on top of it leading to high fever. Signs of severe infection (lung) are: 1. Very high grade fever 2. Breathing difficulties - breathing as if he is panting 3. Unable to talk/speak words 4. Very very sleepy and not easily arousable. In summary: 1. Respiratory tract infections are common during this age group 2. Frequency do diminsh as they grow older 3. I ve mentioned about serious signs to watch out for during an episode of infection.
