6 Month Baby, Suffering From Frequent Cough, Running Nose. Suggest Some Home Remedies?

Hello Dr.,
I have a baby girl who is 6 months old.We came to Bangalore after my delivery when she was 3.5 months. From her 4th Month onwards, i noticed she used to have frequent bouts of cough, running nose etc.
Well s WWW.WWWW.WW has been on and off antibiotics since then. I know every medicine has a side-effect.
I feel bad giving her so much mediciation already.I give her steam twice a day.It seems to have helped to an extent but not much.
Please let me know some home remedies to keep her away from cold.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

For cold and cough, oral drops like antihistamines and mucolytic agents are enough.

If there is no fever, or signs of bacterial infection, antibiotics are not required.

If there is nose block, you can put nasal saline drops 1 or 2 into each nostril for relief from nose obstruction.

Avoid the exposure of the child to cold weather, pollution, and to people with cold and cough.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Irshad H Naqvi's  Response
Hi Dear,
Welcome to the Health Care Magic,
Dear mother, I can feel your concern.
I would like to tell you that it has been seen that, those children who are exclusively breast fed, are having good immunity against such type if viral /bacterial infections. These exclusively breast fed children are not coming frequently to the pediatrician for these ailments.
Any child who is prone for the respiratory tract infections they can develop R T Infections frequently and even six to twelve times in a year. This frequency is labelled as normal for these children.
Any way but if some body has already contacted the virus then we have to treat that child with full heart, so that they should not develop any complication of such viral infection. Usually these children also develop superadded bacterial infection and land in to bacterial pneumonia, breathing difficulty and might to be hospitalized ,hence antibiotics become must for them to check the flaring infection.Which at times if not controlled properly, may prove to be fatal. So many times avoidance also leads to a bigger problem.
Regarding home remedies;-
Avoid contact with the infected person which is most crucial in my opinion.
Hygienic living &food.
Immunity boosters like breast feed. high protein diet. sunlight exposure.Use of multivitamins and iron drops, etc
Hope your query is answered
Thanks
