6 Year Kid Diagnosed With MRSA. Grandmother Having Emphysema. Should Kid Avoid Contact With Her?

hi,
My 6 year old grandson has been just diagnosed with MRSA. there is a family pool party planned for tomorrow, he has just started his antibiotic and it will not be 24 hrs by the time the party starts. My question is my mother has emphysema and I will be visiting heron Sunday. Should I avoid contact with my Grandson Saturday just to be sure I don't carry it to my mother? she is 80 and has end stage emphysema.

Hi Dear

Welcome to the board of Health care magic.

Emphysema is not a contagious condition provided she is not infected.

Your child require proper antibiotic with proper doses and required duration. This will cure your child completely.

Grandma is not going to harm him any way.

Enjoy the gettogether.

Hope your query is answered .

Thanks

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

As your mother is having end stage emphysema and because of her age, I advise you to prevent the exposure of her to the child with MRSA infection.

Old age people and with underlying chronic problems are more prone for infections, in which the treatment with antibiotics will give not favorable results.

If the prevention of exposure is not possible, prevent the physical contact with the child like kissing, shaking hands.

Hand hygiene with frequent washing of hands with antiseptics like hand rub will prevent the transmission of infection.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

There could be transmission of MRSA from the child to the old lady.
Old people have poor immunity and should be protected from getting the infection.
So avoid contact of the child with the old lady until the infection is cured with antibiotics.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
