9 Weeks Pregnant With Identical Twins. Not Able To Hear Heartbeat In Ultrasound. Miscarriage?
Hello, I am nine weeks and one day pregnant with identical twins. At my six week ultrasound the heartbeats were detected but at my ultrasound yesterday the technician could not see or hear a heartbeat. The technician also said I was measuring at eight and a half weeks, not nine because the twins were a little smaller in size. I have had some sort of cramping off and on since day one but no spotting. Is it possible the technician missed something or am I really having a miscarriage? The doctor wants to do a D&C tomorrow and I am afriad that will reduce my chances at conceiving because this will be my second miscarriage.
I am afraid that the absence of heart beat on ultrasonography suggests that the fetuses have not survived. There is discrepancy in the chronological gestational age and the gestational age on ultrasound. This indicates intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or intrauterine death (IUD). In your case it is due to IUD. The cramping pain suggests that the contractions have set up to expel the dead fetuses. The D&C procedure will hasten the process of expulsion.
Since, this is second miscarriage, so consult your gynecologist for a clinical examination, investigations and treatment to avoid further miscarriage.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
