Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A week ago I was bitten by a cat in an animal shelter. I was planning to volunteer and accidentally showed up a week early for my orientation. While waiting in a room I was guided to by other volunteers. There was a cat loose in the room. It came up to me and was quite friendly. It wrapped around my legs and I petted it. I sat down and it jumped upon my lap. I petted it again, then it jumped up on the table next to me. The next thing I knew the cat took a hefty bite into my hand. I cleaned the area, and put some vinegar on it for healing. Today at my actual orientation, I learned this cat has been diagnosed with HIV. I was told it was not a problem as there had to be blood contact for me to have a concern. Is this accurate? Should I take any further precautions?
