Hello!
Thank you for the query.
It is impossible to tell, using only an ultrasound, if the swelling is due to infection or not. When you make an ultrasound, you just see an intestine wall. It can be regular or with thick wall. This wall thickening can indicate an inflammation, however other reason should be also considered.
Such intestine swelling can be caused by inflammatory bowels disease or
colon cancer. And this two diseases should be also considered.
If this swelling is in the large intestine,
diverticulitis can be the reason. But it is not possible to tell with just an ultrasound. Diverticulitis gives lower right
abdominal pain.
That is why I suggest you to discuss this ultrasound result with your doctor. Blood work should be done (WBC and CRP should be elevated in case of infection, low hemoglobin level will indicate other reason). If it is really an infection, antibiotics (like Ciprofloxacine 500 mg 2x1) should be prescribed. After the acute inflammation will be healed,
colonoscopy should done. If this swelling is more in the
small intestine, abdominal CT with oral contrast (enteroclysis) should be done.
Hope this will help.
Regards.
