Abnormal Pigmentation On Ankle. Reason For Pigmentation?
My 27 year old son came to visit today and I noticed that his ankle looked like the skin was two shades of color his normal skin color and almost like freckled skin color. He pulled up his levis and on both legs he had this spotting on his skin. I asked how long his skin was like that and he stated awhile. What would make his pigmentation change like that?
Hi, Your son seems to have Schamberg's disease.. It is a mild form of capillaritis. Also known as progressive pigmented purpuric dermatosis.
It is a skin disease with purpura due to leaking from capillaries close to the skin surface. It most often affects the legs and spreads slowly. The discoloration is brown/orange due to haemosiderin deposition in the skin.
Schamberg's disease usually runs a chronic course with frequent exacerbations and remissions. The rash may be present for many years with slow extension. Lesions may occasionally disappear spontaneously. Lesions consist of... Asymmetrical brown/orange patches. Non-blanchable purpura. Petechiae called "cayenne pepper" spots (develop at the edge of old lesions).
The disease is benign and dose not lead to severe morbidity. It may be healed by itself. Give him mild steroid cream to apply. He may take vitamin C and vitamin K. Tell him to Keep the legs elevated during sleep. Pentoxyphyllin may be helpful.
I hope you got my answer.
Regards.
