Ammonia Smell In Nostrils, Sores In Nose, Sinus Pain. Inhaled Copper Sulphate, Ammonia Mixture In Previous Accident. Suggestions?

I have a severe smell of ammonia in my nostrils, my mucus has burnt my nose to the point that I have severe sores. I also have severe sinus pain. About 20 years ago I was involved in an incident where I inhaled a mixture of copper sulphate and bleach so the ammonia smell, which is common for me to experience, I am not sure if it is just in my head, but it is a very strong smell and as I say my mucus is causing sores in my nise.

Hi and thanks for the query,

You will certain need a proper evaluation by an ENT specialist. Chronic sinusitis with possible accumulation of pus, in either the sinuses or nearby structure should be the case. Specific X rays to evaluate the vacuity of the sinuses are compelling. Drainage and pus culture should be the rule to identify causative organisms and detect specific antibiotics that could be used to treat them. It would be very appropriate to investigate predisposing factor that could favor persistence or aggravation of this infection. These could range from immune depressing diseases like Diabetes, HIV AIDS, cancers and other tumors, nasal polyps and a tumor of the carvum, which should be systematically ruled.

It might be of interest to investigate nearby structures like the throat, the mastoid process to ensure complications have not spread to these regions yet. Consult your ENT specialist for proper medical care.

Thanks and hope this helps as I wish you the best of health. Kind regards,

Bain LE, MD.
