I have had chronic sinus problems for years and even had sinus surgery a few years ago,. Now when I get sinus infections, I loose my sense of smell for a few days. However, I have a constant smell of ammonia inside my nose. I smell ammonia clearly but can put other strong substances such as perfume or oranges up to my nose and smell nothing. what is causing the ammonia smell?
sinus infection is one of the common complications of allergies. Sinus infection gives you a sense of 'bad smell' maybe ammoniacal or not. Not well controlled asthma and allergies also give the same amonia smell. there is possibility of sinusitis relapse even after surgery, the best investigation test is CT Scan to find the degree of sinusitis.
