Ankle Fracture, Using Crutches, Swelling, Blood Flow To Toes When Foot Is Put Down. Advise?

Hi, I had a broken fracture in the ankle and I did a procedure to replace the bone from outside, no screws or plates and I had a cast for 6weeks, I'm using crutches and I elevate my foot as much as I can but whenever I put it down it gets swollen and blood flew to my toes like a stream. So us it normal , when does this end? Is everything will be good and normal after the 6 weeks? Now it has been 3weeks.
Thanks
Susie

Hello Susie,
Welcome at HCM.

I have read your question.

It is not abnormal to have swelling when you put your foot after surgery.Even just keeping the foot in dependent position may lead to swelling in foot. This problem will gradually go away when you keep your foot above level of your heart & do active toe movements. This may take 2-3 weeks more to disappear.

Hope this will help you.

With best wishes.

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The changes in the blood flow that you feel are normal after immobilization for a long time. This will gradually decrease as you will start using your ankle normally after physiotherapy.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. You can consult me again directly through my profile URL http://bit.ly/Dr-Praveen-Tayal
